A Fresh Look for CSS: The Story Behind Its New Logo

12/21/2024

CSS, the design backbone of the web, has officially stepped into a new era with a bold and thoughtful new logo. Introduced on November 12, 2024, this purple design not only represents the evolution of CSS but also carries a deeply human story at its core.

Why a New Logo?

The previous CSS logo, tied to “CSS3,” no longer reflected the language’s boundless growth. With CSS now supporting advanced features like math, animations, and dynamic layouts, it was time for a modern, versatile emblem. In August 2024, Adam Argyle, a Chrome CSS Developer Advocate, kickstarted the project to find a new logo. Open to global collaboration, the effort gathered hundreds of creative submissions, culminating in Javier Aguilar's design, which was voted the winner.

The Meaning of Purple: A Tribute to #RebeccaPurple

The choice of purple is far from arbitrary. It’s a tribute to #rebeccapurple, a color named in memory of Rebecca Meyer, the late daughter of CSS pioneer Eric Meyer. Rebecca’s love for purple inspired the web community to honor her with this special addition to the CSS palette in 2014. Today, the new logo reinforces Rebecca’s enduring legacy and reminds us of the people and stories that shape the web.

Collaboration and Innovation

The logo's softer, modern shape was designed to stand alongside icons like those of JavaScript and TypeScript while maintaining a unique identity. It highlights CSS’s adaptability, collaboration, and progressiveness—hallmarks of a language that has evolved beyond styling to power immersive, interactive web experiences.

A Unified Symbol

The new logo isn’t just a visual update; it’s a celebration of CSS’s vibrant community and its journey. From educators and developers to designers, this logo unites everyone who continues to push CSS into new frontiers.
